Showing the world what you do with headshot or business branding photography for some is straightforward. But for many, it’s uncharted territory and it can be so uncomfortable they avoid it altogether.

People buy from people. So the initial connection you create with an engaging image is essential if you want to encourage the reader to find out more about you and the services you offer.

So when it comes to business branding photography what are your options?

You could use a selfie or get a friend to help, but often the results are disappointing and the quality isn’t good enough for commercial use.

A professional headshot and personal branding photographer, on the other hand will guide you through the process. They’ll help you create photos that are tailored to your business and your target audience.

Most business photography projects can be broken down into 3 simple steps

1. The planning stage (don’t skip this)

This is where you get to know your photographer and you’ll explore

  • Your message and how you want to come across
  • How you feel about having your photo taken
  • The style of photography
  • Outfit choices and locations
  • Where the images will be used, for example web, social or print
  • Graphic design elements that need to be considered

Occasionally the planning stage highlights areas that need clarification. If that’s the case, it’s best to step back and check the direction again at this point.

It’s also the time to decide whether you’re looking for a headshot or a personal branding photo session.

A headshot is often described as a visual handshake. It’s a head and shoulders photo that shows you looking your best and helps you connect with your audience quickly. There’s lots of different styles to choose from, but whatever route you take, your headshot should be visually engaging and aligned with your brand.

With personal branding photography, you can start to introduce more storytelling. You can show where you work, what you do and how you make your clients feel. People buy from people, so these storytelling images are perfect for capturing your personality and bringing your brand and business to life.

The planning stage is the most important stage. Skip or rush through it and you could end up with a set of photos that don’t feel like you or connect with your audience. Take your time, do the prep and you’ll find the rest of the process runs smoothly.

2. The photo session

Now you’re ready to take the outputs from the planning stage and have your photo session. By this point, you’ll be clear on the style of photography and how the images will tell your story.

It can also be great fun and by relaxing and getting involved, you’ll add the energy and the connection that’s an essential part of successful personal branding photography.

3. The edit and delivery of your photography

The edit is where we choose the strongest images and we enhance and prepare them for their end-use, whether it’s for a print project or a set of photos optimised for your website.

It may seem scary at the start, but with careful planning you’ll end up with a set of images that feel authentic and on brand, that you’re proud to share.

Your photography and your copy are two of the most important aspects of your marketing. Get them right and there’s every chance you’ll convey the exact message you’ve planned to your prospects and clients.

We had a business photography session with Nick to create some fresh images for our website. Nick understood the ethos of the firm and the message we wanted to convey. He put us all at ease, which isn’t easy given our loathing of having photos done! Nick was great at choosing different locations and suggesting ideas. We wouldn’t hesitate to use him again.
