Family photography for your special occasion

Everyone loves a special occasion and timeless family photography is the perfect way to create some wonderful memories of the day. With our busy lives and families living further apart, it’s extra special when you have the chance to bring everyone together.

Following a referral I was contacted by Anna to photograph her parents golden wedding anniversary in Bath. The photography was a surprise gift for Marilyn and Roger from their daughters, so we created a gift voucher to be shared a few days before the event.

The setting was perfect. A wonderful English summer’s day, stunning views across Bath, space for the grandchildren to let off steam and a group of close friends and family, all gathered to celebrate!

Finding the right photographer for your celebration

When it comes to planning your party, it’s worth searching out the right photographer for you and your family. You’ll want to work with someone you connect with – after all you’re inviting your photographer into a private and intimate family occasion.

Take some time to look at their work and their photographic style. What are other clients saying? If they have a Google or Facebook page check out the reviews to get a feel for their approach and the client experience.

If they offer a planning session, use the opportunity to share ideas – do you come away feeling inspired and confident in their approach?

Getting to know you and my approach

When it comes to planning the photography, I’ll spend time beforehand getting to know you. We’ll talk about your plans and what you’re hoping to achieve. How many guests are you having? Are there going to be lots of children or just adults? Do you want a few group shots or do you prefer to keep it relaxed and photographed in a story-telling style?

By spending time discussing the options you’ll be able to ask lots of questions and you should feel comfortable with my approach. When it comes to the day you’ll be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the fun!

If you’ve decided to have a few group photos, it often works well to capture these fairly early on – after that you can let your hair down and enjoy the party. We can always pick up a few more later on but at least we know we’ve got the important ones. With your help we’ll bring the groups together and photograph quickly – no one likes hanging around for a group photo.  I’ll keep the mood relaxed and with some gentle direction we’ll avoid those stiff and awkward poses.

After that, I’ll work in the background quietly picking out the details, looking for all the interactions and capturing your guests enjoying themselves.

Are you planning to include a speech or even just a short thank you? If you are I always recommend trying to capture some photos of this part too. The expressions, reactions and laughter always create some great photos.

Here’s a small selection of the photos from Marilyn and Roger’s anniversary celebration.
