Business photography with two female solicitors having a business meeting

Have you wondered why does storytelling work in business? How can it make a difference to the quantity and quality of your customers?

Let’s consider a typical business scenario. Imagine you’re looking for an accountant and you’ve whittled it down to two firms based on reviews, the services they offer and a couple of recommendations. They feel pretty similar so you decide to set up a meeting with them before you make a final decision.

Accountant A tells you all about their qualifications, their new head office, the fancy software they use and why they’re the number one accountancy firm in the area. They blow your mind with statistics, their client list and their technical knowledge. They appear very competent, but it all feels a bit dry.

Accountant B has taken some time to research your business. They share some slides showing the team and a quick bio. There’s some warm and engaging headshots that reveal a bit of character and they show who you’ll be working with and why. Then they share a case study using a business that’s from a different sector but similar to yours. They show how they applied their expertise and how it helped them run their business more efficiently.

People tend to do business with people they know, like and trust and in our quick comparison, Accountant B scored really highly on connection. They showed you who you’d be working with and by sharing a story (a case study) they gave you confidence they could deliver. They applied their technical skills to a real world situation.

Accountancy firm B, told you a story and they took you on a journey. They invited you in and showed they understood you.

Most importantly, they allowed you to imagine what it would be like working with them.

This is where storytelling is so powerful, allowing you to share complex ideas that are real, relatable and memorable.

What visual and written stories can you share that will help to build a connection with your customers?
